Authentically American, the simple exquisite beauty of Shaker architecture is an absolute expression of their uncommon way of living. Shakers believed they served God by approaching every task with care. The architecture, art and furniture are defined by the values of simplicity, utility and fine craftsmanship. On the inside and out the buildings broke with the vernacular traditions of the day and remain relevant as inspiration for designers today. The Shaker influence has been diverse. Scandinavian furniture, Landscape Architect Stephen Stimson, modernist furniture designer Hans Wegner and architect, woodworker and furniture maker George Nakashima all owe a debt of gratitude to the Shakers.
